If he asks you was I runnin’ (Yeah) / If he asks you was I runnin’ / If he asks you was I runnin’.
Tell him I was flyin’ (hey, tell him I was flyin’) / Tell him I was flyin’ (hey, tell him I was flyin’).
I don’t want your old darn shackles / I don’t want your old darn shackles / I don’t want your old darn shackles.
It hurts my leg (hey, it hurts my leg) / Hurts my leg (hey, it hurts my leg).
I don’t want no greenback dollar / I don’t want no greenback dollar / I don’t want no greenback dollar.
It hurts my pride (hey, it hurts my pride) / Hurts my pride (hey, it hurts my pride).
Swing this hammer, it looks like silver, / Swing this hammer, it looks like silver, Swing this hammer, it looks like silver.
But it feels like lead (it feels like lead) / But it feels like lead (it feels like lead).
So, I don’t want no cornbread and molasses / I don’t want no cornbread and molasses / I don’t want no cornbread and molasses.
It hurts my pride (it hurts my pride) / It hurts my pride (it hurts my pride).
So, take this hammer, carry it to the captain / Take this hammer, carry it to the captain / Take this hammer, carry it to the captain.
Tell him I’m gone (hey, tell him I’m gone) / Tell him I’m gone (hey, tell him I’m gone).
2. River of Jordan – A.P. Carter
I’m going down to the River of Jordan / Oh, yes / I’m going down to the River of Jordan some of these days.
I’m going down to the River of Jordan / I’m going down to the River of Jordan some of these days.
I’m going to eat at the welcome table / Oh, yes / I’m going to eat at the welcome table some of these days.
I’m going to eat at the welcome table / I’m going to eat at the welcome table some of these days.
I’m going to sing in the heavenly choir / Oh, yes / I’m going to sing in the heavenly choir some of these days.
I’m going to sing in the heavenly choir / I’m going to sing in the heavenly choir some of these days.
I’m going to put on the silvery slippers / Oh, yes / I’m going to put on the silvery slippers some of these days.
I’m going to put on the silvery slippers / I’m going to put on the silvery slippers some of these days.
I’m going to sit down by my Jesus / Oh, yes / I’m going to sit down by my Jesus some of these days.
I’m going to sit down by my Jesus / I’m going to sit down by my Jesus some of these days.
3. Hickory Wind – Gram Parsons
In South Carolina, there’re many tall pines.
I remember the oak tree, that we used to climb.
But now when I’m lonesome, I always pretend.
That I’m gettin’ the feel of hickory wind.
I started out younger, had most everything.
All the riches and pleasures, what else can life bring?
But it makes me feel better, each time it begins.
Callin’ me home, hickory wind.
It’s a hard way to find out, that trouble is real
In a faraway city, with a faraway feel
But it makes me feel better, each time it begins.
Callin’ me home, hickory wind.
Keeps callin’ me home, hickory wind.
4. Going to the West
In this fair land I’ll stay no more / Here labor is in vain.
I’ll leave the mountains of my birth / And seek the fertile plains.
I’m going to the West.
You say you will not go with me / You turn your eyes away.
You say you will not follow me / No matter what I say.
I’m going to the West.
Three years have passed since we first met / And you became my bride.
Now I must journey far away / Without you by my side.
I’m going to the West.
You say you will not go with me / You turn your eyes away…
I’ll leave you here in the land you love / Mid scenes so bright and fair.
Where fragrant flowers are blooming / And music fills the air.
I’m going to the West.
You say you will not go with me / You turn your eyes away…
5. No Depression In Heaven – A.P. Carter
For fear the hearts of men are failing / For these are latter days we know.
The Great Depression now is spreading / God’s word declared it would be so.
I’m going where there’s no depression / To the lovely land that’s free from care.
I’ll leave this world of toil and trouble / My home’s in Heaven, I’m going there.
In that bright land, there’ll be no hunger / No orphan children crying for bread.
No weeping widows, toil or struggle / No shrouds, no coffins and no death.
I’m going where there’s no depression…
This dark hour of midnight nearing / Tribulation time will come.
This storm will hurl in midnight fear / And sweep lost millions to their doom.
I’m going where there’s no depression…
6. One Hundred Years From Now – Gram Parsons
One hundred years from this day / Will the people still feel this way,
Still say the things that they’re saying right now?
Everyone said I’d hurt you / They said that I’d desert you.
If I go away / You know I’m gonna get back some how.
Nobody knows / What kind of trouble we’re in.
Nobody seems to think it all might happen again.
One hundred years from this time / Would anybody change their minds,
And find out one thing or two about life?
But people are always talking / You know they’re always talking.
Everybody’s so wrong that I know it’s gonna work out fine.
Nobody knows / What kind of trouble we’re in.
Nobody seems to think it all might happen again.
7. To Her Door – Paul Kelly
They got married early, never had much money / Then when he got laid off they really hit the skids
He started up his drinking, then they started fighting / He took it pretty badly, she took both the kids.
She said, “I’m not standing by, to watch you slowly die / So watch me walking, out the door”.
She said, “Shove it, Jack, I’m walking out the fucking door”.
She went to her brother’s, got a little bar work / He went to the Buttery, stayed about a year.
Then he wrote a letter, said I want to see you / She thought he sounded better, she sent him up the fare.
He was riding through the cane in the pouring rain / On Olympic / to her door, to her door / to her door …
Riding through the cane in the pouring rain / On Olympic / to her door / to her door / to her door.
He came in on a Sunday, every muscle aching / Walking in slow motion like he’d just been hit.
Did they have a future? Would he know his children? / Could he make a picture and get them all to fit?
He was shaking in his seat riding through the streets / In a silvertop to her door,
…to her door / to her door / to her door.
8. Six Months Ain’t Long – Bill Monroe
Come all my friends wherev’r you may be / And listen to my song,
You all do see I mean no wrong / Cause all I’ve got’s done gone.
Six months ain’t long / Ain’t long to be gone
Six months, six months ain’t long
Six months ain’t long / For me to be gone
Oh darling Six months ain’t long
If I was framed by an upright judge / For six long months of time.
I’ll do my best to make the test / Darling I’ll be home soon.
Six months ain’t long…
The judge he fixed a sentence there / The clerk she wrote it down.
Six months ain’t long in the county jail / For shooting up the town.
Six months ain’t long…
9. I Shall Not Be Moved – traditional
I shall not, I shall not be moved / Oh I, shall not, I shall not be moved,
Just like a tree planted by the water / I shall not be moved.
I’m on my way to heaven, I shall not be moved / On my way to heaven, I shall not be moved,
Just like a tree planted by the water / I shall not be moved.
Oh I, shall not, I shall not be moved / I shall not, I shall not be moved,
Just like a tree planted by the water / I shall not be moved.
Oh preacher, I shall not be moved / Oh preacher, I shall not be moved,
Just like a tree planted by the water / I shall not be moved.
I’m sanctified and holy, I shall not be moved / Sanctified and holy, I shall not be moved,
Just like a tree that’s planted by the water / I shall not be moved.
I shall not, I shall not be moved / Oh I, shall not, I shall not be moved,
Just like a tree planted by the water / I shall not be moved.
10. Trouble In Mind – traditional
Going down to the river / gonna take my rocking chair,
If these blues don’t leave me / I’ll rock right out of here.
Trouble in mind, I’m blue / but I won’t be blue always,
Cause the sun’s gonna shine / In my back door someday
Break_
Going down to the railroad / lay my head down on the line,
Let that east bound freight train / come satisfy my troublin’ mind.
Trouble in mind, I’m blue…
Break_
I got trouble, yeah trouble / I got trouble on my mind,
If you see me laughing / It’s just to keep from crying.
Trouble in mind, I’m blue…
Break_
Trouble in mind, I’m blue / my poor heart is beating slow,
Never had so much trouble / in my life before.
Trouble in mind, I’m blue…
Break_
11. The Sunny Side of Life – Carter Family
There’s a dark and a troubled side of life / There’s a bright and a sunny side too.
Though we meet with the darkness and strife / The sunny side we also may view.
Keep on the sunny side, always on the sunny side Keep on the sunny side of life.
It will help us every day, it will brighten all the way If we keep on the sunny side of life.
Oh, the storm and its fury broke today / Crushing hopes that we cherish so dear.
Clouds and storms will in time pass away / The sun again will shine bright and clear.
Keep on the sunny side, always on the sunny side…
Let us greet with a song of hope each day / Though the moments be cloudy or fair.
Let us trust in our Saviour always / To keep us, every one, in his care.
Keep on the sunny side, always on the sunny side…
12. Jim Jones of Botany Bay – Trad.
Come and listen for a moment, lads, and hear me tell my tale,
How across the sea from England I was condemned to sail.
Well, the jury found me guilty; then says the judge, says he,
“Oh, for life, Jim Jones, I’m sending you across the stormy seas.
“But take a tip, before you ship to join the iron gang,
Don’t get too gay in Botany Bay, or else you’ll surely hang.
Or else you’ll surely hang,” he says, “And after that, Jim Jones,
It’s high up upon the gallows tree the crows will pick your bones.”
Well, our ship was high upon the sea when pirates came along,
But the soldiers on our convict ship were full five hundred strong.
Oh, they opened fire and somehow drove that pirate ship away.
But I’d rather’ve joined that pirate ship than gone to Botany Bay.
With the storms a-raging ’round us and the winds a-blowing gales,
I’d rather have drowned in misery than gone to New South Wales.
There’s no time for mischief there, they say, remember what I say,
Or they’ll flog the poacher out of you down there in Botany Bay.
Oh, it’s day and night the irons clang and like poor galley slaves,
We toil and toil, and when we die must fill dishonoured graves.
So it’s bye and bye I’ll slip these chains and to the bush I’ll go,
And I’ll join the brave bushrangers there, Jack Donahue and Co.
And some dark night, when everything is silent in the town,
I’ll shoot those tyrants, one and all, I’ll gun the floggers down.
Yes, I’ll give the law no little shock, remember what I say,
And they’ll yet regret they sent Jim Jones in chains to Botany Bay.
13. John Hardy Was a Desperate Little Man – Trad.
John Hardy, he was a desperate little man / He carried two guns every day
He shot a man on the West Virginia line / And you ought to see John Hardy getting away
John Hardy got to the East Stone Bridge / He thought that he would be free
And up stepped a man and took him by his arm / Saying Johnny, walk along with me
He sent for his poppy and his mommy too / To come and go his bail
But money won’t go a murdering case / And they locked John Hardy back in jail
John Hardy had a pretty little girl / That dress that she wore was blue
As she came skipping through the old jail hall / Saying Poppy I’ve been true to you
John Hardy had another little girl / That dress that she wore was red
She followed John Hardy to his hanging ground / Saying Poppy I would rather be dead
I’ve been to the east and I’ve been to the west / I’ve been this wide world around
I’ve been to the river and I’ve been baptized / And it’s now I’m on my hanging ground
John Hardy walked out on his scaffold high / With his loving little wife by his side
And the last words she heard poor John-O say / I’ll meet you in that sweet bye and bye
14. This Little Light Of Mine – Trad.
This little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine … (X3)

This little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine … (X3)
Let it shine, let it shine, let it shine.
This little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine … (X3)
Let it shine, let it shine, let it shine.
15. Suzanna Gal – Trad.
Sixteen horses in my team / The leader he is blind.
I’m going down that rocky road / To see that gal of mine.
Sixteen horses in my team / As I go riding by.

How’d you make your living now / Suzanna gal?
Drinking whiskey and playing cards / Suzanna gal.

Married girl, married girl, rocks the cradle and cries / Oh, rocks the cradle and cries.
Single girl, single girl, going dressed fine / Oh, going dressed fine.
Married girl, married girl, wears just any kind / Oh, wears just any kind.
17. Ten Thousand Miles – Trad.
I’m going away to leave you dear / I’m going away for a while.
But I’ll return to see you sometime / If I go ten thousand miles.
The storms are on the ocean / Heaven it seemed to be.
This world will lose its motion love / If I prove false to thee.
Oh who will shoe your pretty little feet / And who will glove your hand?
Who will kiss your rosy red cheeks / When I’m’s on foreign land?
Papa will dress my pretty little feet / And Mama will glove my hand.
You may kiss my rosy red cheeks / When you return again.
The storms are on the ocean…
Oh have you seen that mournful dove / That flies from pine to pine?
It’s weeping for its own true love / Just like I weep for mine.
I’ll never go back on the ocean love / I’ll never go back on the sea,
I’ll never go back on my blue-eyed girl / Til she goes back on me.
The storms are on the ocean…
18. Love Somebody, Yes I do – Trad.
Love somebody, yes I do …. (x3)
Love somebody but I won’t say who.
Grasshopper sitting on a sweet potato vine / Grasshopper feeling oh so fine.
Grasshopper sitting on a sweet potato vine / Along comes a chicken and says you’re mine.
Chicken in the bread tray scratchin’ out dough / Granny, will your dog bite? No, child, no.
Ladies to the center and gents to the bar / Hold on you don’t go too far.
Chicken in the bread tray pickin’ out dough / Granny, will your dog bite? No, child, no.
Ladies to the center and gents get best / Hold on tight don’t let her rest.
Gonna get a drink, don’t you want to go… (x3)
All for soldier’s joy.
Well it’s twenty-five cents for morphine / Fifteen cents for the beer.
Twenty-five cents for morphine / Take me away from here.
19. Oh Susanna – Stephen Foster
I came from Alabama, with a banjo on my knee / I’m going to Louisiana, my true love for to see.
It rained all night the day I left, the weather it was dry / The sun so hot I froze to death; Susanna, don’t you cry.
Oh! Susanna, don’t you cry for me / Cause I’ve come from Alabama, with my banjo on my knee
I had a dream the other night, when everything was still / I thought I saw Susanna coming down the hill.
The buckwheat cake was in her mouth, a tear was in her eye / Says I, I’m coming from the south, Susanna don’t you cry.
Oh! Susanna, oh don’t you cry for me…
I jumped aboard the telegraph, and travelled down the river / The electric fluid magnified, and killed a hundred sailors.
The bull gone bust, the horse run off, I really thought I’d die, / I shut my eyes to hold my breath, Susanna don’t you cry.
Oh! Susanna, oh don’t you cry for me…
I soon will be in New Orleans, and then I’ll look all round / And when I find Susanna, I’ll fall upon the ground.
And if I do not find her, this man will surely die / And when I’m dead and buried, Susanna, don’t you cry.
Oh! Susanna, oh don’t you cry for me…
20. The Boatmen’s Dance – Daniel Decatur Emmett 1843
High row the boatman row / floating down the river, the Ohio.
The boatman dance, the boatman sing, the boatmen up to everything.
And when the boatmen gets on shore, he spends his cash and works for more.
[Chorus] Dance the boatmen dance, Oh dance the boatmen dance.
Dance all night to the broad daylight, and go home with the girls in the morning.
High row the boatman row / floating down the river, the Ohio.
The boatman is a thrifty man, there’s none can do as the boatman can.
I never saw a pretty gal in my life, but that she was a boatman’s wife.
[Chorus] Dance the boatmen dance…
High row the boatman row / floating down the river, the Ohio.
I went on board the other day, to see what the boatmen had to say.
There I let my passion loose, and they crammed me in the callaboose.
[Chorus] Dance the boatmen dance…
High row the boatman row / floating down the river, the Ohio.
The oyster boat she keeps to the shore, the fishing smack should venture more.
The schooner sails before the wind, the steamboat leaves a streak behind.
[Chorus] Dance the boatmen dance…
21. Can The Circle Be Unbroken – A.P. Carter
I was standing by my window / On a cold and cloudy day
When I saw that hearse come rolling / For to carry my mother away.
Can the circle be unbroken? / By and by Lord, by and by,
There’s a better world home a-waiting / In the sky Lord, in the sky.
Lord, I told the undertaker / Undertaker please drive slow
For that body that you are holding / Lord, I hate to see her go.
Can the circle be unbroken…?
Well I followed close behind her / Tried to hold up and be brave.
But I could not hide my sorrow / When they laid her in the grave.
Can the circle be unbroken…?
Went back home Lord, my home was lonesome / Miss my mother she was gone.
All my brothers, sisters crying / What a home so sad and alone.
Can the circle be unbroken…?
22. Will The Circle Be Unbroken – original hymn version 1907
There are loved ones in the glory / whose dear forms you often miss.
When you close your earthly story / Will you join them in their bliss?
Will the circle be unbroken, by and by, by and by?
Is a better home awaiting, in the sky, in the sky?
In the joyous days of childhood / Oft they told of wondrous love.
Pointed to the dying saviour / Now they dwell with him above.
Will the circle be unbroken, by and by, by and by?
Is a better home awaiting, in the sky, in the sky?
Do you love the hymns they taught you / Or are songs of earth your choice?
You remember songs of heaven / Which you sang with childish voice.
Will the circle be unbroken, by and by, by and by?
Is a better home awaiting, in the sky, in the sky?
You can picture happy gatherings / Round the fireside long ago.
And you think of tearful partings / When they left you here below.
Will the circle be unbroken, by and by, by and by?
Is a better home awaiting, in the sky, in the sky?
One by one their seats were emptied / One by one they went away.
Now the family has been parted / Will it be complete one day?
Will the circle be unbroken, by and by, by and by?
Is a better home awaiting, in the sky, in the sky?
23. Angeline The Baker – based on Stephen Foster, 1850
Angeline the baker, age of forty-three / Fed her sugar candy and she still won’t marry me.
Angeline the baker, Angeline I know / Should have married Angeline just twenty years ago.
Angeline the baker lives on the village green / The way I always loved her beats all you’ve ever seen.
Angeline the baker, age of forty-three…

Angeline the baker, age of forty-three…
I went and bought a brand new dress, was neither black nor brown / Was the color of a stormy sky before the rain came down.
Sixteen horses in my pack, leader he was blind / I dreamed that I was dying, and I saw my Angeline.
Angeline the baker, age of forty-three…
24. Angelina Baker – Stephen Foster, 1850
Way down on the old plantation that’s where I was born, / I used to beat the whole creation hoeing in the corn.
Oh! then I work and then I sing, so happy all the day / Till Angelina Baker came and stole my heart away.
Angelina Baker, Angelina Baker’s gone / She left me here to weep a tear / And beat on the old jawbone.
Early in the morning on a lovely summer day / I ask for Angelina, and they say she’s gone away.
I don’t know how to find her, cause I don’t know where she’s gone / She left me here to weep a tear and beat on the old jawbone.
Angelina Baker, Angelina Baker’s gone…
I’ve seen my Angelina in the spring-time and the fall / Seen her in the corn-field and I’ve seen her at the ball.
And every time I met her she was smiling like the sun / But now I’m left to weep a tear cause Angelina’s gone.
Angelina Baker, Angelina Baker’s gone…
Angelina is so tall she never sees the ground / She has to take a telescope to look down on the town.
Angelina likes the boys as far as she can see em / She used to run around the town to see if she could grab em.

When I’m gone (When I’m gone)…
27. Big Rock Candy Mountains – Harry Mcclintock
One evening as the sun went down / And the jungle fire was burning,
Down the track came a hobo hikin’ / And he said, “Boys, I’m not turning,
I’m headed for a land that’s far away / Beside the crystal fountains,
So come with me, we’ll go and see / The Big Rock Candy Mountains.
“In The Big Rock Candy Mountains / There’s a land that’s fair and bright,
Where the handouts grow on bushes / And you sleep out every night,
Where the boxcars all are empty / And the sun shines every day,
On the birds and the bees and the cigarette trees / The lemonade springs where the bluebird sings / In The Big Rock Candy Mountains.
“In The Big Rock Candy Mountains / All the cops have wooden legs,
And the bulldogs all have rubber teeth / And the hens lay soft-boiled eggs,
The farmers’ trees are full of fruit / And the barns are full of hay,
Oh I’m bound to go where there ain’t no snow / Where the rain don’t fall, the wind don’t blow / In The Big Rock Candy Mountains.
“In The Big Rock Candy Mountains / You never change your socks,
And the little streams of alcohol / Come a-trickling down the rocks,
The brakemen have to tip their hats / And the railroad bulls are blind,
There’s a lake of stew and of whiskey, too / You can paddle all around ’em in a big canoe / In The Big Rock Candy Mountains.
“In The Big Rock Candy Mountains / The jails are made of tin,
And you can walk right out again / As soon as you are in,
There ain’t no short-handle shovels / No axes, saws or picks,
I’m a-goin’ to stay where you sleep all day / Where they hung the jerk that invented work / In The Big Rock Candy Mountains.
“I’ll see you all this comin’ fall / In the Big Rock Candy Mountains”.
28. I Got A Bulldog – Traditional
I got a bulldog, she cost five hundred.
I got a bulldog, she cost five hundred.
I got a bulldog, she cost five hundred.
In my back yard babe in my back yard.
When he barks she roars like thunder.
When he barks she roars like thunder.
When he barks she roars like thunder.
He’ll bite you baby, gonna bite you bad.
Take this hammer and give it to the captain.
Take this hammer and give it to the captain.
Take this hammer and give it to the captain.
Tell him I’m gone babe, tell him I’m gone.
When you see my long haired buddy.
When you see my long haired buddy.
When you see my long haired buddy.
Tell her I’m gone baby, tell her I’m gone.
When you pass by say good morning
When you pass by say good morning
When you pass by say good morning
But I’ll be gone like a turkey through the corn.
I’ve got a bulldog, she cost five hundred.
I’ve got a bulldog, she cost five hundred.
I’ve got a bulldog, she cost five hundred.
In my back yard babe, in my back yard.
29. Hard Times Come Again No More – Stephen Foster
Let us pause in life’s pleasures and count its many tears,
While we all sup sorrow with the poor.
There’s a song that will linger forever in our ears,
Oh, hard times, come again no more.
‘Tis the song, the sigh of the weary,
Hard times, hard times, come again no more.
Many days you have lingered around my cabin door,
Oh, hard times, come again no more.
While we seek mirth and beauty and music, light and gay,
There are frail forms fainting at the door.
Though their voices are silent, their pleading looks will say,
Oh, hard times, come again no more.
‘Tis the song, the sigh of the weary,
Hard times, hard times, come again no more.
Many days you have lingered around my cabin door,
Oh, hard times, come again no more.
There’s a pale weeping maiden who toils her life away,
With a worn heart whose better days are o’er.
Though her voice would be merry, ’tis sighing all the day,
Oh, hard times come again no more.
‘Tis the song, the sigh of the weary,
Hard times, hard times, come again no more.
Many days you have lingered around my cabin door,
Oh, hard times, come again no more.
30. Angel Band – William Batchelder Bradbury
My latest sun is sinking fast, my race is nearly run,
My strongest trials now are past, my triumph is begun.
O come, angel band, come and around me stand,
O bear me away on your snowy wings, to my immortal home.
O bear me away on your snowy wings, to my immortal home.
I know I’m near the holy ranks, of friends and kindred dear,
I hear the waves on Jordan’s banks, the crossing must be near.
O come, angel band, come and around me stand…
I’ve almost reached my heav’nly home, my spirit loudly sings,
Your holy ones, behold, they come, I hear the noise of wings.
O come, angel band, come and around me stand…
O bear my longing heart to him, who bled and died for me, Whose love now covers all my sin, and gives me victory.
O come, angel band, come and around me stand…
31. I’d Rather Be Tending My Sheep – Trad.
If I was the king of Taunton town,
I’d wear a sword and a golden crown.
I’d ride on afore when we went to the war,
With soldiers to follow, a hundred or more.
But I’d rather be tending my sheep,
Yes, I’d rather be tending my sheep.
My ewes and my rams and my little young lambs.
I’d rather be tending my sheep.
If I was a Bristol merchant-man,
With silver to collar and silver to hem,
And fine chests of gold, a sight to behold,
The thieves and the robbers they’d soon make me old.
But I’d rather be tending my sheep…
A shepherd I’ve been all the days that I’ve seen,
When the fields they’re white and the fields they are green.
And I do meet my foe when the cold wind does blow,
When the foxes so cunning hide down in the snow.
But I’d rather be tending my sheep…
32. Yellow Rose Of Texas – oldtime version, Trad.
There’s a yellow rose of Texas, I’m going back to see,
There is no other feller, that loves her just like me.
Where the Rio Grande is flowing, and the starry skies are bright,
She walks along the river in the quiet summer night.
Going back to find her, how happy I will be,
The Yellow rose of Texas, a sitting on my knee.
I’m going back to Texas, Now I’m on my way,
When I get back to Texas, in her arms I’ll stay.
33. June Apple – B part as sung by Tommy Jarrell
Wish I was a June Apple / Hanging on a tree
Every time my true love passed / She’d take a little bite of me
Going across the mountain / I’m going in a swing
When I get on the other side / I’m gonna hear my true love sing
Don’t you hear that banjo saying / I wish that boy was mine
Can’t you hear that banjo saying / I wish that boy was mine
Charlie he’s a nice young man / Charlie he’s a dandy
Charlie he’s a nice young / He feeds the gals on candy
Over the river to feed my sheep / Over the river Charlie
Over the river to feed my sheep / Feed them all on barley
Wish I had some sticks and poles / Build my chimney higher
Ever time it rains or snows / Puts out all my fire
34. Handsome Molly – Trad.
Well I wish I was in London / Or some other seaport town
I’d set my foot on a steamboat / And sail the ocean round
While sailin’ around the ocean, sailin’ around the sea
I’m thinking of handsome Molly wherever she might be
Remember oh dear Molly when you gave me your right hand
You said if you were to marry that I would be your man
But now you broke your promise, go marry who you please
While my poor heart is a breakin’ you’re goin’ at your ease
While sailin’ around the ocean…
She goes to church on Sunday, she passes me on by
I can tell her love is changin’ by the rovin’ of her eye
Her hair is like a raven, eyes black as coal
Here cheeks they shone like lillies out in the mornin’ glow
While sailin’ around the ocean…
35. Dreams – Stevie Nicks
Now, here you go again, you say you want your freedom
Well, who am I to keep you down?
It’s only right that you should play the way you feel it
But listen carefully to the sound
Of your loneliness
Like a heartbeat, (Heart) drives you mad (beat)
In the stillness (Still-) of remembering (-ness)
What you had (Lonely) and what you lost (Ooh, ooh)
And what you had (Ooh, ooh) and what you lost (Ooh)
Oh, thunder only happens when it’s rainin’
Players only love you when they’re playing
Say, “Women, they will come and they will go”
When the rain washes you clean, you’ll know
You’ll know
Now, here I go again I see the crystal visions
I keep my visions to myself
It’s only me who wants to wrap around your dreams and
Have you any dreams you’d like to sell?
Dreams of loneliness
Like a heartbeat, (Heart) drives you mad (beat)
In the stillness (Still-) of remembering (-ness)
What you had (Lonely) and what you lost (Ooh, ooh)
And what you had (Ooh, ooh) Ooh, what you lost (Ah, ah)
Thunder only happens when it’s rainin’
Players only love you when they’re playing
Women, they will come and they will go
When the rain washes you clean, you’ll know
Oh, thunder only happens when it’s rainin’
Players only love you when they’re playing
Say, “Women, they will come and they will go”
When the rain washes you clean, you’ll know
You’ll know
You will know
Oh, you’ll know
36. Frank Mills
I met a boy called Frank Mills on September the twelfth right here in front of the Waverly, but unfortunately I lost his address.
He was last seen with his friend, a drummer, he resembles George Harrison of the Beatles, but he wears his hair tied in a small bow at the back.
I love him but it embarrasses me to walk down the street with him.
He lives in Brooklyn somewhere and wears this white crash helmet.
He has gold chains on his leather jacket and on the back is written the names: Mary and Mom and Hell’s Angels.
I would gratefully appreciate it if you see him tell him I’m in the park with my girlfriend. And please, tell him Angela and I don’t want the two dollars back, just him!
37. I’ll Fly Away – Albert E. Brumley
Some bright morning when this life is over,
I’ll fly away.
To that home on God’s celestial shore,
I’ll fly away.
I’ll fly away oh glory,
I’ll fly away (in the morning),
When I die hallelujah by and by
I’ll fly away.
When the shadows of this life have gone,
I’ll fly away.
Like a bird from these prison walls I’ll fly,
I’ll fly away.
I’ll fly away oh glory…
Oh how glad and happy when we meet,
I’ll fly away.
No more cold iron shackles on my feet,
I’ll fly away.
I’ll fly away oh glory…
Just a few more weary days and then,
I’ll fly away.
To a land where joys will never end,
I’ll fly away.
I’ll fly away oh glory…
I’ll fly away oh glory…
38. Bartender’s Blues – James Taylor
Now I’m just a bartender, and I don’t like my work
But I don’t mind the money at all
I’ve seen lots of sad faces and lots of bad cases
Of folks with their backs to the wall
But I need four walls around me to hold my life
To keep me from going astray
And a honky tonk angel to hold me tight
To keep me from slipping away
I can light up your smokes, I can laugh at your jokes
I can watch you fall down on your knees
I can close down this bar, I can gas up my car
And I can pack up and mail in my keys
But I need four walls around me to hold my life
To keep me from going astray
And a honky tonk angel to hold me tight
To keep me from slipping away
Now the smoke fills the air in this honky tonk bar
And I’m thinkin’ ’bout where I’d rather be
But I burned all my bridges and I sunk all my ships
Now I’m stranded at the edge of the sea
I still need four walls around me to hold my life
To keep me from going astray
I need some honky tonk angels to hold me tight
To keep me from slipping away
39. Jackson – Lucinda Williams
All the way, to Jackson,
I don’t think I’ll miss you much.
All the way, to Jackson,
I don’t think I’ll miss you much.
Once I get to Lafayette,
I’m not gonna mind one bit,
Once I get to Lafayette,
I’m not gonna mind one little bit.
Once I get to Baton Rouge,
I won’t cry a tear for you,
Once I get to Baton Rouge,
I won’t cry a tear for you.
All the way, to Jackson,
I don’t think I’ll miss you much.
All the way, to Jackson,
I don’t think I’ll miss you much.
Once I get to Vicksburg,
I don’t think I’ll feel the urge,
Once I get to Vicksburg,
I won’t even feel an urge.
All the way, to Jackson,
I don’t think I’ll miss you much.
All the way, to Jackson,
I don’t think, I’ll miss you much.
40. New England – Bragg/ McColl
I was 21 years when I wrote this song.
I’m 22 now, but I won’t be for long.
People ask me when will I grow up to understand
Why the girls I knew at school are already pushing prams.
I loved you then as I love you still.
Though I put you on a pedestal, you put me on the pill.
I don’t feel bad about letting you go,
I just feel sad about letting you know.
I don’t want to change the world,
I’m not looking for a new England.
Are you looking for another girl?
I don’t want to change the world,
I’m not looking for a new England.
Are you looking for another girl?
I loved the words you wrote to me.
But that was bloody yesterday.
I can’t survive on what you send,
Every time you need a friend.
I saw two shooting stars last night,
I wished on them but they were only satellites.
It’s wrong to wish on space hardware,
I wish, I wish, I wish you’d care.
I don’t want to change the world,
I’m not looking for a new England.
Are you looking for another girl?
I don’t want to change the world,
I’m not looking for a new England.
Are you looking for another girl?
My dreams were full of strange ideas.
My mind was set despite the fears.
But other things got in the way.
I never asked that boy to stay.
Once upon a time at home,
I sat beside the telephone,
Waiting for someone to pull me through.
When at last it didn’t ring, I knew it wasn’t you.
I don’t want to change the world,
I’m not looking for a new England.
Are you looking for another girl?
I don’t want to change the world,
I’m not looking for a new England.
Are you looking for another girl?
Looking for another girl… Girl… Girl…
41. Lee Harvey Was A Friend Of Mine – Bennison
Lee Harvey was a friend of mine.
He used to take me fishin’ all the time.
He used to throw a ball to me when I was just a kid.
They say he shot the president, but I don’t think he did.
Well, I was born in Dallas in 1952.
And Lee Harvey lived across the street on Bentley Avenue.
He used to throw a ball to me when I was just a kid.
They say he shot the president, but I don’t think he did.
Lee Harvey was a friend of mine.
He used to take me fishin’ all the time.
He used to throw a ball to me when I was just a kid.
They say he shot the president, but I don’t think he did.
Well, I’ve seen that picture of him holdin’ pamphlets and a gun.
And there’s shadows pointin’ every which way, but only just one sun.
Someone faked that photo and then snuck away and hid.
They say he shot the president, but I don’t think he did.
Lee Harvey was a friend of mine.
He used to take me fishin’ all the time.
He used to throw a ball to me when I was just a kid.
They say he shot the president, but I don’t think he did.
Well, I saw it all on TV, Lee Harvey got gunned down.
And he was killed off by Jack Ruby, the biggest sleaze in town.
He stuck a gun into his ribs and said, “Here’s lookin’ at you, kid”…
Jack Ruby killed Lee Harvey – my TV proved he did.
Lee Harvey was a friend of mine.
He used to take me fishin’ all the time.
He used to throw a ball to me when I was just a kid.
They say he shot the president, but I don’t think he did.
Lee Harvey was a friend of mine…
